Nice
I spent all of 16 hours in Nice, 8 of which were spent sleeping. AND, to top it all off, for the time I DID spend outside, I didn’t have a camera with me!
Shocking, I know.
I was planning to run across the street to the market to get something for dinner but I ran into a group of girls from Australia who were headed off to Mackers (that’s Mickey D’s to us American folk) so I decided to join them instead. Yes, that’s right. I ate McDonald’s. My 3 year boycott has come to an end. I still haven’t had a burger from there though, so that part is still going strong.
Anyway – after dinner we decided to walk around a bit because we had a few hours of daylight to kill and the hostel was umm… interesting.
Since I was only planning to run across the street all I brought with me was a few euro. We ended up walking up and down nearly the entire Promenade and I don’t have a single photo.
Part of me is sad about that, but the other part is kind of relieved. It means fewer photos for me to edit when I get home and it really made me take in everything around me as opposed to snapping some photos here and there to look at later. I had to commit everything to memory. I haven’t had to do that since finals week ;).
So we went back to the hostel just as it was getting dark and as it looked like it was about to rain. There were some really nice people in my room for the night (which is an entire story unto itself) and we just hung out and chatted because most of us had to catch the bus by 8AM.
The hostel room was…how shall I put it? A comedy of errors. Standard setup of bunkbeds and things, but it was in the attic of some last-minute-add-on type building behind the hostel. We had to go through the hostel, down the stairs, past the patio and the kitchen, up the stairs, and then into our room. It was kind of weird and add to that the sound of rats running and scratching in the roof right above us and the paranoia of bed bugs and you’ll understand why this wasn’t my favorite place.
Luckily I only had one night there so I was up early and on the bus to Switzerland. Nice was decent, but if I do return to the French Riviera, I’m definitely going to Monaco ;).
